I started working in the film and video industry some 35 years ago, in Cincinnati Ohio. After receiving an honorably discharged from the U. S. Navy 1964 I went to work in a machine shop but soon learned this was not for me. I meat a news man in Cincinnati named Chic Poppe who worked for W C P O TV Ch9. He taught me the ropes and I soon was on my way with film camera in hand. Some of my biggest stories wile in this market came the night Beverly Hills Supper Club burned to the ground and killed more then 165 people wile John Davidson was the main performer on stage that night. Another national story I covered was the WHO Concert at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Coliseum where 13 people died when the crowd of people rushed the only few doors that open that night. I won several local, state and national awards for the stories I covered in this time period
In 1981 I moved to Houston Texas and went to work with KHOU-TV Ch11, which lasted for about a year when Walt Hawver called and offered me a job at KTRK-TV Ch 13. Some of the best stories of my carrier were the Jessica McClure story where in Midland Texas she fell down into a well and was trapped for several days. The Plane crashes in Dallas (DFW) airport Delta 191 and then Delta 1191, both of which was a real eye opener for me. Sorry that I can’t show you any of the video’s as they are copyrighted by the stations. I might add I won an Emmy for the McClure story with Leslie Brinkley.
